A garage slab usually sits at grade with reasonably dry concrete below it. A basement slab sits below grade, which means soil contact, hydrostatic pressure, and ongoing moisture migration through the concrete. That difference changes everything about how a coating has to be installed. The grinding step is similar, but the primer is not. For most Chattanooga basements we use a 100% solids epoxy moisture-mitigation primer that bonds to damp concrete and acts as a vapor barrier between the slab and the finish coats above. Skip that primer and the coating will eventually blister and lift no matter how good the topcoat is.
Finished basements that double as living space. Home gyms where rubber tiles get pulled up and the homeowner wants a real floor underneath. Wine rooms and bars where stains and odors get absorbed by raw concrete. Music rooms, hobby workshops, and rec rooms. Unfinished basements where the homeowner just wants the dust and stains to go away. In all these cases a sealed coating is a serious upgrade over bare concrete, and a noticeably easier living experience than carpet or laminate over a damp slab.
The slab gets diamond ground, then moisture tested. If the reading is high, we apply a moisture-mitigation primer and let it cure. We chase and fill any structural cracks, repair pits, and address joints based on the room's use. Then comes the finish system. Most basements get an epoxy or polyaspartic base coat with a flake broadcast for the look and slip resistance, sealed with a clear UV-stable topcoat. For finished basements that double as entertaining space, we will often install a metallic epoxy or solid-color finish instead.
